Tree Service in Cook County Is Not One Job

Cook County covers Chicago and 134 suburbs. The work changes considerably depending on where in it you are.

The North Shore takes in Wilmette, Winnetka, Glencoe, Kenilworth and Northfield. Those towns hold some of the oldest and largest parkway trees in the region. Removals there are usually rigging jobs rather than felling jobs, because there is no room to drop anything.

The near-west and southwest suburbs include La Grange, Berwyn, Cicero, Oak Park and Riverside. Developers platted them with narrow lots, alleys and rear garages. That geometry decides the method. Crews work from the alley and rig the wood down in pieces, so the price reflects the access rather than the tree.

The south suburbs mix pre-war housing with post-war subdivisions. That stretch covers Blue Island, Dolton, Markham, Homewood, Chicago Heights, Harvey, Robbins, South Holland, Posen and Phoenix. Consequently one block can carry mature street trees. The next has trees planted at build-out, only now getting large enough to cause trouble.

The northwest suburbs are largely subdivisions built out from the 1960s onward. That covers Schaumburg, Palatine, Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect and Elk Grove Village. Wider lots mean more ground work and fewer crane days.

The southwest corner borders the Forest Preserves of Cook County. Orland Park, Tinley Park and the Palos communities sit along it. So do Oak Lawn, Hickory Hills, Evergreen Park, Worth and Alsip. In practice that means mature natural stands sitting directly against residential property lines.

Permits and Registration Vary by Town

Cook County does not set one rule. Many municipalities require a contractor registration on file before any work starts. Additionally, a parkway tree or anything in the public right-of-way needs a separate permit. Some require neither. A few require both plus a bond.
