Tree Service in Deerfield, IL Starts With a Permit
Deerfield regulates tree work tightly. So the first thing we settle is whether your tree is a protected one. Section 21-28 of the village code makes it unlawful to remove or damage a public tree or a protected tree without a permit. Section 21-22 defines a protected tree three ways. It covers any public tree, any heritage tree, and any healthy tree of eight inches diameter at breast height or more. Consequently the permit question turns on species, size and location.
Pruning is treated differently. Section 21-23(d) exempts pruning that complies with the pruning standards. Routine trimming therefore needs no permit. However, section 21-8A requires that trimming follow the ISA Tree Pruning Guidelines. It also bars trimming of elm and oak from April 1 through November 1, except in emergencies. The penalty there runs up to $500 per tree.

Dead Ash and the Ten-Day Clock
Ash was planted heavily in north suburban subdivisions, and emerald ash borer went through years ago. Section 21-25 names emerald ash borer specifically. It requires the owner to remove or prune the tree within ten days of written notice from the village. That is a short window. Knowing it before the letter arrives beats learning it after.
A dead ash also gets harder to take down the longer it stands. The wood turns brittle. It loses the strength a climber needs to work it safely, so the price moves up rather than down. Therefore a gray, bare ash is the one to deal with first.
Meanwhile, if a tree becomes an imminent hazard, section 21-37 lets you remove it without a permit first. An application still has to go in within fourteen days afterward.
Whose Tree Is It
The parkway strip between the sidewalk and the street is village right of way. Section 21-22 defines parkway trees as public trees. Every public tree counts as protected regardless of diameter. As a result, section 21-28 applies to it with no size threshold at all. In practice the parkway tree in front of your house is not yours to remove.
The village prunes those trees itself on a stated four-year cycle. Behind the sidewalk, the eight-inch rule takes over. Sections 21-33 and 21-35 then set the mitigation. Replacement stock runs two inches caliper or eight feet in height, planted within twelve months. Penalties under section 21-38 run from $100 to $1,500.
One caveat we will not paper over. Chapter 21 lists a section 21-42, titled Requirements for Contracted Tree Maintenance. The village’s online code viewer will not render its text. So we confirm what Deerfield actually requires of a tree service contractor before we bid the job. We do not guess at it from a neighboring town’s rules.
