What Tree Service in DuPage County Runs Into

DuPage is almost entirely built out, and that shows up in the work. There is very little open ground left, so most removals happen with a house on one side, a fence on the other, and something overhead. The job is decided by access far more often than by the tree.

The east side of the county — Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Clarendon Hills, Lombard and Villa Park — developed early and carries the county’s oldest canopy. Those are rigging jobs. The west and northwest — Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Bloomingdale, Bartlett, Warrenville and Darien — went in from the 1960s onward, so the trees were planted together and they are reaching full size together. Whole streets come due within a few years of each other.

Salt Creek and the DuPage River

Salt Creek and both branches of the DuPage River run the length of the county, and the ground along them behaves differently. In saturated soil a tree does not snap partway up — it goes over at the root plate and brings the root ball with it, which makes the cleanup a bigger job than it looks from the road. If your property backs onto a creek or sits in the floodplain, those trees are worth looking at before a storm rather than after one.

Dead Ash

Ash went in heavily across DuPage subdivisions and emerald ash borer moved through years ago. What is standing now is dead wood that has been drying since. A dead ash turns brittle and loses the strength a climber needs to work it safely, so the price goes up the longer it stands. A gray, bare ash is the one to deal with first.

Permits and Registration Vary by Town

DuPage does not set one rule for all 39 municipalities. Many villages require a contractor registration on file before work starts and a separate permit for anything in the parkway or public right-of-way. Some require neither. Some require both. County-level information is at dupageco.org, but the village is the authority on its own code.

Tree and bush removal — dead, damaged, or simply in the wrong place, rigged down in sections where there is no room to fell. Stump grinding — four to eight inches below grade, deeper if you are replanting. Land and lot clearing — construction sites, fence lines, and lots that have gone back to brush.
