Tree Service In Oakbrook Terrace, From Demolition Plans To City Trees
In Oakbrook Terrace the tree rule most likely to reach a private lot sits in the demolition code. Section 153.02(A)(6) requires a demolition permit application to include a tree preservation plan that identifies “all trees with a five inch diameter trunk or larger located on the property,” and trees removed for re-use of the property must be replaced “with trees of similar species and with a minimum of five inch diameter trunk.” Demolition without compliance carries a fine of “not more than $500” under § 153.99(A). If a teardown is coming, tree service Oakbrook Terrace work belongs after the plan is drawn, not before.

Chapter 53: Oakbrook Terrace’s Trees On City Property
Chapter 53 gives the city “the right, but not the obligation,” to plant, prune, maintain and remove city trees, shrubs and other plants (§ 53.03), and assigns the public services department duties “concerning the planting, pruning, removal, spraying, maintenance and protection” of them (§ 53.04). Section 53.06 makes it “unlawful for any person” other than city franchisees or agents to cut, carve, break, climb or otherwise “injure or deface any city tree, shrub or other plant.” Section 53.99(A) addresses cost recovery from anyone who damages one, and the text we saw refers to remediation “such as pruning or cabling, if the injured tree, shrub or other plant will survive.” We read Chapter 53 only in fragments, so we cannot say whether a resident can get a permit to trim or remove a city tree; ask the city before touching one.
Other sections touch everyday tree work. Public works collects landscape waste from single-family homes under § 51.05, with “tree limbs not to exceed a diameter of six inches,” and § 150.03 lists “tree and stump grinders” among equipment covered by the city’s noise limits. Section 95.45, on utilities in the right-of-way, requires a tree trimming permit for other utilities. For pruning that keeps a tree sound, the Morton Arboretum’s homeowner resources are worth a look.
Contractor registration in Oakbrook Terrace. Chapter 120 requires city registration for general, public utility and trade contractors doing work “within the city that requires a building permit,” and its trade contractor definition includes “landscapers, but excluding residential maintenance landscapers.” Tree work is not named, and we could not confirm whether it needs a building permit. Where registration applies, § 120.08 sets a $100 fee, § 120.04(D)(3) a $10,000 surety bond, and § 120.05(A) $1,000,000 general liability limits, $1,000,000 auto coverage, statutory workers’ compensation and $500,000 employers’ liability; under § 120.07 a registration ends on the last day of April of the following year. Ask any contractor for proof of coverage — including us.
A Small City Under A 31-Story Tower
Oakbrook Terrace incorporated in 1959 — first as Utopia, renamed in November of that year — and holds 2,751 people on about 1.33 square miles of York Township. Its skyline is the Oakbrook Terrace Tower, Helmut Jahn’s 31-story octagon, completed in 1987 at 418 feet, the tallest building in Illinois outside Chicago, on the former site of Dispensa’s Kiddie Kingdom. Drury Lane is next door, and the Joint Commission has its headquarters here.
That office and commercial character shows up in the code: § 154.08 sets fees for landscaping and tree planting plans on business and multi-family sites, and zoning § 156.049 carries landscaping requirements. We work both sides of the city — the commercial grounds around the offices and the homes on the streets behind them.
Oakbrook Terrace Work We Do
- Tree and bush removal — residential and commercial, with the § 153.02 plan in hand on demolition sites
- Trimming and pruning — private trees; city trees stay with the public services department unless the city says otherwise
- Stump grinding — with grinders run inside the § 150.03 noise rules
- Storm response, 24 hours a day
Storm damage. If wires are involved, call 911 and then your electric utility before anyone approaches the tree. City collection takes limbs no more than six inches across under § 51.05; anything heavier from a storm needs a crew.
