What The DuPage County Code Says About Trees In Medinah

The county’s tree language is in Chapter 8, its Building Code, under § 8-129 Landscape Regulations. Section 8-129.1 lists among its purposes “To encourage the preservation of existing trees and other vegetation” and to regulate the clearing and disturbing of land during planning and site development. Screening landscaping is required for subdivisions, planned developments and other developments that are not single-family homes. A search of the county code for “tree removal” turned up no standalone tree-removal or forestry chapter.

Section 8-129.3 requires a tree survey before site plan review and alongside any application for zoning relief, a subdivision, or a property with a transition yard; for a single-family detached lot or a two-lot subdivision, the owner may draw that survey on a site survey. Once a landscape preservation plan is approved, § 8-129.6(1) says the applicant must hold off on clearing trees until the required approvals and permits are in hand. A tree posing an immediate safety hazard may be removed at any time, provided the county is notified within 48 hours, and a dead or destroyed plan tree is replaced caliper for caliper. We found no penalty stated in § 8-129.6.

The County Division of Transportation requires a highway permit, a certificate of insurance naming the county and a highway permit bond for anyone proposing construction within, upon, along, under or over a County Highway Route. Its FAQ does not mention tree work, and it does not address township roads; who maintains trees along Medinah’s township roads could not be confirmed. For pest and pruning questions that no county section answers, University of Illinois Extension is a sound public reference.

Shriners, Golf And A Name Change In 1924

The first post office here opened in 1874 under the name Meacham, Illinois. In the 1920s, members of Chicago’s Medinah Temple, the Shriners, built a country retreat with a 54-hole golf course, and the community took the name Medinah in 1924. Medinah Country Club has since hosted the U.S. Open in 1949, 1975 and 1990, the PGA Championship in 1999 and 2006, the 2012 Ryder Cup and the 2019 BMW Championship, and it is listed as the 2026 Presidents Cup venue. The 2015 American Community Survey estimated 2,097 residents in 744 households.

What that history leaves behind for a homeowner is a place with no village forester, no village parkway program and no village public works crew, because there is no village. When a large tree on a Medinah lot starts to decline, the decision of what to do and when is mostly the owner’s, which is a reason to have it looked at by someone who will tell you plainly whether it needs to come down.
