Tree Trimming In Darien And The Parkway Sight Line
We found no tree chapter in the Darien City Code. The one tree rule we located is § 6B-3-8: “Trees within the parkway shall be kept trimmed at all times,” and trimmed “in such a manner as not to obstruct the vision of motorists and/or pedestrians.” The section does not say who does the trimming, and it is silent on planting, removal and ownership. Much of the parkway work is the city’s own — an annual Parkway Tree Trimming Program that covered about 3,500 parkway trees in the cycle announced in December 2025. The tree trimming Darien homeowners hire us for is the rest of the canopy, behind the sidewalk.

What Darien’s Code And City Programs Cover
Section 6B-3-8 sits in Title 6B, Street Division, Chapter 3, Street and Right of Way Regulations, in a City Code current through Ordinance O-27-26, passed July 20, 2026. It caps other parkway plantings at 24 inches in height and leaves trees out of that cap. The chapter has a violation and penalty section, § 6B-3-11, which we did not read and cannot summarize.
The city’s December 2025 news release describes its trimming program and a “Private Property Tree Trimming Program available to all residents,” which offers contract pricing for work on private trees. On March 4, 2026, Darien received “a $53,000 Illinois Community Canopy Tree Inventory & Management Plan Grant,” through Trees Forever and funded by IDNR, to survey all public trees in the street rights-of-way. While that inventory gets under way, University of Illinois Extension’s pruning guidance is a good read for anyone tending young trees in their own yard.
Contractor requirements in Darien. The City of Darien is the authority on its own requirements, and its website is the place to start. Nothing on this page is legal advice. Before any company starts on your trees, ask for its certificate of insurance and whatever paperwork the city requires — and hold us to the same.
Darien After The 2021 Tornado
On June 20, 2021, an EF3 tornado moved through Woodridge and into Darien, causing significant damage, including to homes on Lemont Road. Wind on that scale can leave a standing tree with cracked branch unions and torn bark that take years to show as decay, so a tree that rode out 2021 still deserves a look from the ground and from the crown.
Darien is young as a city — subdivisions near Downers Grove merged to form it in 1969 — but the area is old: New England settlers arrived in 1835 along a stagecoach line, first calling the place Cass, and the name came later from Darien, Connecticut. The city’s south edge borders the Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve. Castle Eden, the 1903 house associated with Martin B. Madden, is slated to come down; its owner announced demolition in July 2026.

- Storm response, 24 hours a day
Storm damage. If wires are involved, call 911 and then your electric utility before anyone approaches the tree. Darien took an EF3 tornado on June 20, 2021, and our phone is answered around the clock for nights like that one.
