Tree Removal in Northfield, IL
Northfield has the most precise tree fee schedule of any village around it, and the thresholds are low enough that the tree removal Northfield homeowners think of as routine usually needs a permit. Under Section 10-13, effective 1 May 2003, a protected tree is one greater than six inches caliper on naturalized land, or greater than three inches caliper in previously landscaped areas.
Three inches is a young tree. In a landscaped yard — which most of Northfield is — that catches almost everything worth removing.

When You Need A Tree Permit Here
Five activities trigger one: subdividing land; removing or damaging any tree on multi-family residential property; removing or damaging any tree in the required front or side yard setback of a single-family residential district; removing or damaging any tree on non-residential property; and removal on single-family property in non-residential use.
Note what that list does and does not cover. Northfield regulates by yard location — front and side yard setbacks are named, rear yards are not. That distinction is unusual, and it is the first thing we establish when someone rings about a removal here.
The fee schedule. Dead or diseased removal: no fee, with a contractor letter. Tree protection during remodeling or construction: no fee plus a $500 escrow. Healthy tree removal during remodeling or construction: $125 plus $500 escrow. New construction, commercial or subdivision: $175 plus $500 escrow. Dead, diseased or infested trees in front or side yard setbacks need a Letter of Authorization.
Replacement Is Inch For Inch
Replacement runs one inch of new tree per inch removed for a quality tree, and two inches per inch for a damaged protected tree, at a minimum three-inch caliper, with one year of care by the petitioner and an off-site cash contribution allowed where there is no room to plant. Root Zone is defined as one foot of radial distance for every inch of tree DBH — a useful number to know before anyone brings machinery near a tree you intend to keep.
Caliper is used as the measure up to eight inches; above that the code switches to diameter at breast height. Violations are fined under Appendix D, plus abatement costs assessed to the owner.
North Shore Trees, North Shore Expectations
Northfield covers 3.23 square miles in Northfield Township with 2,420 housing units. Winnetka Avenue and Sunset Ridge Road run through it; the old Kraft Foods headquarters here is now occupied by Medline Industries.
The ordinance itself tells you something about the place: it distinguishes “naturalized land” from “previously landscaped areas” and sets different thresholds for each. That is a village where large parts of private property have never been cleared and are not meant to be — wooded lots, mature canopy, and owners who chose it deliberately.
Work on that kind of property is not clear-and-replace. It is selective: deadwood out of a mature canopy, weight reduced on an over-extended limb, one tree taken, so four others get light. The ISA’s homeowner guidance describes the same approach as mature-tree management rather than removal. Removing a healthy tree here costs you $125 and a permit, and often it is not what the tree actually needs. Half the tree removal Northfield callers ask about turns out to be a pruning job.
