What The Permit Asks For

Section 4-6-4 requires the owner’s name, the contractor’s name, address and phone, the tree’s species, size, condition and location, a written justification, and a review fee. The village may condition approval on replacing the protected trees. A village arborist may review the application alongside the building commissioner.

Emergency work is allowed — but within five days of taking action the owner must complete the relevant portions of the tree permit application. In other words, the paperwork still happens; it just happens afterward. We file it as part of the job, on any tree service Golf sends us out for.

Dangerous Trees Are A Separate Section

Section 4-2-4 defines a dangerous tree as any tree, limb or portion of one which has fallen or threatens to fall and creates a risk of imminent danger or hazard to persons or property, and declares any such tree a public nuisance. The owner must act promptly to remove and dispose of it; failing that, the village or its agents may enter the property, remove the tree and invoice the owner, with a lien recorded in Cook County if the bill goes unpaid after thirty days. The section also requires ash removal to comply with additional regulations where regulated articles are present. That is the one situation where a tree service Golf residents call moves before the permit does.

A 1925 Subdivision Around A Golf Course

Glen View Club built an eighteen-hole course here in 1897, and the village takes its name from railroad executive Albert J. Earling traveling by private rail car “to golf” at the club around 1899. Edward R. Diederich developed the residential area in 1925 — with sewer, water, gas and electricity, paved streets, sidewalks and electric streetlights already installed. Village Hall is at 1 Briar Road, and Golf has its own Metra station on the Milwaukee District North Line.
