The south end of Porter County is outwash plain toward the Kankakee, with a water table three to ten feet below grade. That ground stays soft. In a wet spring it holds water long after the north county has dried out, and that decides two things: when we can get equipment onto a property, and whether a drive needs matting before we do.
It also changes how trees fail. In saturated soil a tree goes over at the root plate rather than snapping partway up. The root ball comes with it, and the cleanup is a bigger job than it looks from the road.
