Trees and Conditions Specific to Gary

Gary’s tree population reflects its history. Developers platted Emerson, Glen Park, Tolleston, and Miller Beach during the steel era. They planted silver maple, green ash, and American elm heavily. Many of those trees now sit well past the age at which limb failure becomes routine.

Three conditions drive most of the work we do here:

  • Emerald ash borer. Ash mortality across northwest Indiana is now near total. A dead ash does not stay stable. The wood dries, turns brittle, and loses the strength a climber needs to work it safely. Past that point, the tree comes down from a bucket or a crane. That costs considerably more than removing the same tree the year it died.
  • Lake-effect wind and ice. Gary sits directly on Lake Michigan. Storms arriving off the water hit the north side of the city before anywhere else in Lake County. Silver maple is common here and prone to included bark at the main union. It is the species we most often find split after a wind event.
  • Industrial corridor soils. Compacted and fill soils near the lakefront industrial belt limit root development. Shallow-rooted trees in those areas fail earlier than the same species elsewhere in the county.

Tree Trimming in Gary

Most residential trimming here falls into three categories. We clear limbs off a roof or service drop, reduce weight on an over-extended lateral before it fails, and remove deadwood from a declining canopy.

How much comes off depends on the tree and on what you need. Some jobs are light cleanup. Others mean taking real height off a tree that has outgrown its spot. We will tell you what we recommend and what the tree will look like when we are finished.

Tree Removal in Gary

Space constrains most removals in Gary more than the tree itself does. Lots in Glen Park and Tolleston run narrow. Many have alleys and rear garages, and overhead utility runs are common along the parkway.

Where we can fell a tree safely, we fell it. Where we cannot, we rig it down in sections. We rope each piece to a control line so it descends under control rather than dropping. That approach takes longer and costs more. But on a lot with a garage, a fence, and a neighbor’s roof within reach, it is the only responsible one.

Every removal includes haul-away of the wood and brush. If you want the wood left for firewood, we are happy to leave it.

Stump Grinding

We grind stumps four to eight inches below grade, deep enough to plant grass over. If you intend to replant a tree in the same spot, we grind deeper and remove the grindings. The remaining wood chips tie up nitrogen as they break down, and they will stunt a new planting.

Storm Damage and Emergency Response

We respond around the clock after storms. If a tree lands on a structure, on a vehicle, or into a service line, call first and photograph second. Stay away from any limb touching a wire until the utility clears it.

Our crews prioritize by hazard. Trees on occupied structures come first, then blocked access, then everything else. During a large regional event, that can mean a wait. We will tell you honestly where you sit in the queue rather than promise a time we cannot meet.

Working in Gary

We are fully insured. We can issue a certificate of insurance naming the property owner or a municipality as certificate holder, usually the same day. For commercial and municipal work, we carry the bonding and registrations each jurisdiction requires.

Parkway trees sit on the strip between the sidewalk and the street. They fall under the city’s jurisdiction, not the adjacent property owner’s, and the work requires a permit. The rules are set out in the City of Gary Code of Ordinances. If you are not sure whether the tree you are calling about is yours, tell us where it sits relative to the sidewalk. We will tell you before you spend money on it.

Other Areas We Serve

Beyond Gary we work throughout northwest Indiana. Our service area includes Hobart, Merrillville, Hammond, Munster, Griffith, Schererville, Crown Point, and East Chicago. See our full northwest Indiana service area.
