What Homeowners Actually Call About

Four things, mostly. A dead or dying tree close to the house. Limbs over the roof or the driveway that have got too long. A stump left behind by somebody else. And a tree that came down in a storm at two in the morning.

Underneath those, the questions people are really asking are: is this urgent or can it wait, is it mine to deal with, and why do three quotes differ by a thousand dollars. Straight answers below.

Is It Urgent, Or Can It Wait?

A tree with a dead crown, a split in the trunk, or a lean that has changed recently is not a spring project. It is a now problem, and it gets more expensive the longer it stands, because dead wood dries out and brittle wood is slower and riskier to work.

Deadwood over a driveway on an otherwise sound tree is different. That is a trim, not a removal, and it costs a fraction as much. If someone quotes you a takedown on a tree that needs pruning, get another opinion. The Morton Arboretum in Lisle publishes plain-language guidance on tree health for Chicago-area homeowners if you want a second view that is not from someone selling you the work.

Whose Tree Is It?

This is the one that surprises people. The parkway tree — the strip between your sidewalk and the street — usually belongs to the village, not to you, even though you mow around it. Removing or heavily pruning it is not the homeowner’s call, and requirements are not uniform across the region. Some towns want a contractor registration on file, some want a permit for anything in the right-of-way, some want neither.

Trees on a property line are the other one. We will tell you plainly when the tree causing you trouble is your neighbour’s, and what we can and cannot do from your side of the line.

We confirm what your village requires before we bid the job, not after you have accepted a price.

Why Quotes Differ So Much

Access, usually. Most of the price in residential tree service is how hard the tree is to get to, not how big it is. The same maple is a straightforward job on a wide lot and a rigging job on a narrow one with a garage behind it and wires overhead. On most Chicago and inner-suburb lots, trees come down in sections on ropes rather than getting felled, and that is slower work.

The other half is what happens afterward. Ask every bidder whether the wood and brush leave the property and whether the stump is included. A cheap number that leaves you with a pile and a stump is not cheap.

What Our Residential Tree Service Covers

Residential tree and bush removal

Tree and Bush Removal

Dead, damaged or in the wrong place, rigged down in sections where there is no room to fell. Wood and brush hauled away.

Stump grinding for homeowners

Stump Removal and Grinding

Ground four to eight inches below grade, deeper if you are replanting or laying sod over it.

Tree trimming and pruning on a residential property

Trimming and Pruning

Clearance over roofs and drives, deadwood out of mature trees, weight off over-extended limbs. Pruned to ANSI A300 standards.

Land and lot clearing on a residential property

Land and Lot Clearing

Fence lines, back corners and ground that has gone to brush — for an addition, a build, or just to get the yard back.

Storm Damage

We answer the phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we work by hazard rather than call order. If wires are involved, stay away from the tree. Call 911 first, then ComEd at 1-800-334-7661. Once it is clear we will get the tree off your house — emergency and storm response.

Request An Estimate

Tell us the address and what the tree is doing — how close it is to the house, and whether anything is already down. A photo helps more than a description. Residential tree service estimates are free and can be scheduled any day of the week.
