Tree Trimming In Porter, IN, Near The Dunes

The Town of Porter’s fine schedule tells you something before any tree chapter does. Section 1-18 of the town code lists “License required for contractors” (§ 14-186) at $75.00 for a first offense. The town licenses contractors, and the code puts a price on skipping it. We could not read Article III of Chapter 14 to learn which trades it covers, so the practical step for anyone arranging tree trimming Porter IN homeowners can rely on is a call to Town Hall to ask whether tree work falls under § 14-186, followed by a request to the crew for the license.

Reading Porter’s 2026 Code Book

Porter posts its Code of Ordinances as a PDF through Supplement No. 20, and the town’s code page says the “Code Book last updated June 15, 2026.” In the part of the table of contents we could read, no chapter, article or section is titled for trees, shrubs or tree preservation. The nearest entries are Chapter 74, Vegetation, whose Article II covers weeds and rank vegetation and whose § 74-19 is titled “Noxious vegetation prohibited”; Chapter 54, Solid Waste; Chapter 58, Streets, Sidewalks and Other Public Places; and two articles of the zoning appendix, Article XV (“Off-Street Parking, Loading and Landscaping”) and Article XXV (“Invasive Species Control”). We did not reach the text of those articles.

The fine schedule in § 1-18 sets $75.00 for a first offense under § 74-19 and $75.00 for the miscellaneous sections from § 74-19 to § 74-28. Whether Porter requires a permit to remove a private tree, or has rules for parkway trees, we could not confirm. The town’s Environmental Sustainability Commission had “Review Town Landscaping Code/Recommendations” on its January 21, 2025 agenda; the agenda states nothing about trees. The Town of Porter is the authority on its own requirements. Nothing on this page is legal advice. If you want to understand what good pruning looks like before you hire anyone, the Morton Arboretum’s pruning guidance covers it well.

The § 14-186 contractor license. Chapter 14, Article III is “Licensing of Contractors,” and § 14-186 is “License required for contractors,” carrying a $75.00 first-offense fine under § 1-18. The fee, bond and insurance amounts, and which trades the article reaches, were not in the portion of the code we could read. Ask Town Hall, and ask any contractor for the license before work starts — including us.

Porter Beach, The Bailly Homestead And Chellberg Farm

“Porter had its start in the 1850s when the railroad was extended to that point.” The town now covers 6.44 square miles of Westchester Township, 0.29 of it water, and had 5,210 residents in 2020. It sits inside the Indiana Dunes ecosystem, with Porter Beach — also called Johnson’s Beach — on Lake Michigan and Indiana Dunes State Park nearby. The Joseph Bailly Homestead on Howe Road, along the Little Calumet River, lies within Indiana Dunes National Park; Chellberg Farm on Mineral Springs Road was settled in 1869; the Augsburg Swedish Lutheran cemetery dates to 1878; and the Good Fellow Club Youth Camp and Porter Town Hall are on the National Register.

National park land inside and around town changes how we work. Where a Porter yard backs onto park woods or anyone else’s trees, we confirm the property line before a branch comes off. And a zoning article titled “Invasive Species Control” is a reason to ask the town before clearing brush on a wooded lot.

Storm damage. If wires are involved, call 911 and then your electric utility before anyone approaches the tree. When a storm drops a tree across the line between a yard and public land, tell us when you call; we deal with the part on your property and leave the rest to whoever owns it.
