New Chicago, Indiana, is small in every direction: 0.68 of a square mile, all land, with 1,999 residents at the 2020 census. That works out to roughly 2,900 people per square mile, which is the number that shapes the job. Its index lists a section in Chapter 8 titled “Trees, shrubs, and grass” (Sec. 8-11), but the body text was not readable to us, so we cannot tell you what it says about removals, parkway trees or anything else.

Before work begins near the street, call the town and ask whether the tree is on public or private ground and whether anything has to be filed. For the tree itself, the ISA’s consumer site has a clear guide to judging whether a tree is healthy or failing. Cracks at the base, fungus on the trunk and dead tops are the usual signs, and on a tight lot they matter sooner.

New Chicago was platted in 1893. A post office opened in 1907 and closed ten years later, in 1917. The town lies in Hobart Township in Lake County, shares the Lake Station–New Chicago library branch at 2007 Central Avenue, and sends its children to River Forest schools.
Density decides the method here more than species does. With houses close together, there is often no open lawn to drop a trunk into, and the brush has to come out through a side yard or gate.
