Tree Removal in Cedar Lake, Indiana

Under the Town Code’s public nuisance provisions, maintaining trees with less than fourteen feet of clearance over a street or less than eight feet over a sidewalk is declared a public nuisance, as is shrubbery over three feet tall within the sight triangle at an intersection. That is unusually specific, and it is worth knowing because it is measurable. If a limb hangs low over the road in front of your house, you do not have to wonder whether it is a problem — you can measure it. Clearance pruning to those heights is straightforward work and far cheaper than dealing with a nuisance notice or a truck strike.

The Water Table Changes How Trees Fail
Cedar Lake’s zoning applies wetland and watercourse provisions to land adjacent to the lake, to streams and creeks, and to ground at or below the hundred-year flood elevation. The town’s own planning documents describe high water tables, periodic flooding and unstable soil as defining conditions here. For trees, that means shallow root plates.
A tree that cannot root deeply because the water table stops it grows a wide, flat root system instead of a deep one. It looks perfectly healthy for decades and then goes over whole in a wind event, root plate and all, rather than shedding limbs first. Windthrow is the characteristic failure near the lake, and it gives far less warning than the branch failures we see inland. Trees on the lakeward side of a property, with open water in front of them and nothing to break the wind, are the ones worth having looked at.
Saturated ground also changes the work itself. A stump grinder or a bucket truck on soft ground leaves ruts that do not recover, so on lakefront lots we plan access before we quote rather than discovering it on the day.
Resort Cottages and the Trees Around Them
Cedar Lake was a resort town before it was a suburb. Chicagoans came down for the summer, and the lakeshore filled with cottages on small lots set close together. Many of those cottages are now year-round houses, extended and rebuilt, but the lot lines never changed. The result is the tightest residential tree work in this part of the county — mature trees between two houses with a few feet either side, and often no vehicle access to the back at all.
That work comes down in sections, rigged and lowered piece by piece rather than felled. It takes longer and it costs more than the same tree in an open yard, and any quote that does not account for the access is a quote from someone who has not walked the property.

Dead Ash Around the Lake
Emerald ash borer reached all 92 Indiana counties and Lake County’s untreated ash is long gone. Dead ash dries brittle and releases limbs without warning, which is why Indiana DNR and Purdue Extension both advise homeowners against taking them down. Around Cedar Lake the problem compounds: a dead ash on saturated ground has both a brittle stem and a root plate that has already started to rot, and those come out with a crane or a bucket rather than a climber.
