Tree Service In Peotone Under The 2023 Tree Preservation Code
Peotone adopted its current tree code in January 2023, and one line in that Chapter 98 is aimed squarely at people like us: § 98.20 makes it “unlawful for any person or firm to engage in the business or occupation of pruning, treating, or removing of any trees” in the village without a village contractor’s license. So the first check on any tree service Peotone residents hire is simple: does the crew hold the village license and the insurance behind it?

How Chapter 98 Treats Parkway And Legacy Trees
Chapter 98, “Tree Preservation,” was adopted by Ord. 23-03, passed January 9, 2023. Its public-tree rule is § 98.17: it is “unlawful for any person to cut, fell, injure, or remove any tree” on a street right-of-way, parkway or other public area without applying to the Village Administrator and receiving Tree Board approval. Before that permit issues, the applicant must have “deposited the sum of $500 into a non-interest-bearing escrow account.” The deposit guarantees a replacement of at least 2-inch caliper from the village’s approved list. It comes back once the new tree is planted and is forfeited if the tree is not replaced within six months. The village decides within ten working days of a complete application, and the permit lapses if work has not started within a year.
Section 98.04(E) adds a protected class of its own: “Legacy trees are provided special protection by the village,” defined as trees “18 inches DBH or larger and located on public property.” Section 98.09(A) reserves to the village the right to plant, prune, maintain and remove public trees, and says village tree care follows ANSI A300. Section 98.09(C) bans topping any street tree or other public tree, with topping defined as “severe cutting back of limbs to stubs larger than three inches in diameter.” The Morton Arboretum’s tree care guidance shows what proper pruning looks like.
We could not confirm whether Peotone requires a permit to remove a tree on private land; ask the village.
The Peotone contractor license. Under § 98.20, applicants “file evidence of possession of liability insurance in the minimum amounts of $50,000 for bodily injury and $100,000 property damage.” Public service companies and village employees are exempt. The section does not state a fee. Violations of the chapter carry a fine of “not less than $100 nor more than $750” under § 98.99, and each day counts as a separate offense. Before a saw starts, ask the crew for the village license and the certificate — we will hand ours over.
A Mill Town 43 Miles South Of Chicago
Peotone sits in Peotone Township in Will County, about 43 miles south of Chicago, and counted 4,150 residents across 2.03 square miles in 2020. The name comes from the Potawatomi language and means “come here.” The village’s best-known structure is the Peotone Mill, also called the Rathje Mill, at 433 W. Corning Ave.: a wind-powered grist mill built in 1872 by Dutch millwrights, whose 60-foot tower made it the tallest structure in town. It went to steam in 1885, closed in 1917 and was listed on the National Register on March 19, 1982.
For trees, the 2023 code matters more than the history. Section 98.10(C) puts the job of removing a tree or limb “likely to fall on or across any public way or place” on the owner of the property where it grows, and § 98.10(A) bars branches that “obstruct the view of any street intersection or stop sign.” A tree likely to fall across the road is the owner’s problem by ordinance.
Peotone Jobs We Take On
- Tree and bush removal — yard trees, and parkway trees once the Tree Board has approved the § 98.17 permit
- Trimming and pruning — sight lines at corners and stop signs opened up, with no cuts that leave stubs
- Stump grinding — ground out so a 2-inch replacement can go in on time to recover the escrow
- Storm response, 24 hours a day
Storm damage. If wires are involved, call 911 and then your electric utility before anyone approaches the tree. Under § 98.10(D), the village’s Public Works Manager may trim or remove trees and branches to clear obstructions or dangers, so a limb blocking the street may be handled by the village first.
