Tree Trimming and Tree Removal in Monee

Tree Removal In Monee, Yard Side And Parkway Side

Monee draws a hard line at the curb. Section 7-4-11(A) of the village code says no person may “remove, destroy, break, cut, deface, trim or injure” a tree in a street, parkway or public place “without a permit from the Village.” Any tree removal Monee residents plan for a parkway tree therefore begins at Public Works, not with a contractor, while the chapter’s sections we read are silent on trees behind the sidewalk. Knowing which side of that line your tree stands on is the first thing we sort out.

Monee’s Chapter 7-4 Tree Regulations

Title 7, Chapter 4 of the Monee code, “Tree Regulations,” was adopted by Ord. 1656 on August 28, 2013. Section 7-4-2 makes “The Superintendent of Public Works or his designee” responsible for enforcing the chapter and for “the issuance of permits.” Several sections keep public-tree work in village hands outright. Under § 7-4-8(D), spraying and pruning “shall be performed by the Village.” Under § 7-4-9, diseased-tree removal “shall solely be undertaken by the Village and its staff,” with top priority going to trees a village certified arborist finds “fifty percent (50%) or more diseased or dead.”

Planting is permitted too. Section 7-4-3 says no one may plant a tree in a public right-of-way or other village-controlled premises “until a permit has been issued,” and only from the approved list. It also caps any single species at “ten percent (10%) of one (1) species per subdivision or region of the Village” and twenty percent village-wide. For a yard tree, where the species is your choice, University of Illinois Extension publishes selection advice worth reading first.

Section 7-4-8 protects public trees during construction: the owner or contractor “shall place guards around all nearby trees on the parkway,” wires may not be permanently attached to any tree, and paving must leave open ground “of not less than two feet (2′) in width around the tree.” Where a public tree is injured, “an approved replacement must be furnished.” We did not find a fine amount in Chapter 4, and the sections we read say nothing about a permit to remove a tree on private property.

Contractor licensing in Monee. Section 3-8-2 requires a license to “engage in business in the village as a building contractor,” but that section does not mention tree work, and we could not confirm whether it reaches a tree crew. The Village of Monee is the authority on its own requirements. Nothing on this page is legal advice. Whoever you hire should show you a certificate of insurance before the job starts, and we will send ours with the estimate.

Named For Marie Bailly, Rebuilt After 1917

Monee is a Will County village of 5,128 people (2020) on 4.47 square miles, all of it land. It takes its name from Marie LeFevre Bailly, wife of the fur trader Joseph Bailly; “Monee” is an indigenous-accented pronunciation of “Marie.” The village sat “on the north edge” of the Cyclone of 1917, which damaged trees and buildings, and its lumberyard supplied the materials to rebuild 67 structures in Green Garden and Monee Township.

That storm is the useful lesson for tree owners here. A wind event that brushes a town still drops limbs that have been weak for years, and the trees that fail first are usually the ones with old pruning wounds, split leaders or decay at the base. Those are the things we look for when we walk a Monee yard.

Monee Work We Handle

  • Tree and bush removal — private yard trees, with parkway trees left to the village unless its permit is in hand
  • Trimming and pruning — on your side of the walk, since § 7-4-8(D) reserves public-tree pruning to the village
  • Stump grinding — so a yard can be replanted with something other than the species already on the block
  • Storm response, 24 hours a day

Storm damage. If wires are involved, call 911 and then your electric utility before anyone approaches the tree. Section 7-4-11(B) says that when a storm leaves a tree endangering life or property, the owner “shall promptly remove them or the parts thereof which constitute the danger” and report to the village “within a reasonable period thereafter.”
