Tree Trimming In Barrington Starts With A Registered Crew
Barrington’s code puts its first tree rule on the contractor rather than the tree. Section 3-20-1 of the Village Code makes it “unlawful to engage in the business of tree removal, tree trimming, tree spraying or tree treatment” “without first having registered with the village,” and § 3-20-2 requires each registrant to file a certificate of insurance “conditioned to indemnify the village and hold it harmless.” For tree trimming Barrington homeowners pay for, the practical first step is asking whether the crew is registered before anyone unloads a saw.

Barrington’s Tree Experts Chapter And Public Tree Rules
The Tree Experts chapter has four sections. Beyond registration and insurance, § 3-20-3 says “No tree trimmer or sprayer shall trim or spray any tree on any public parkway or other property owned by the village” without the written permission of the director of public works, and § 3-20-4 lets the village revoke a certificate for “repeated violations.” Title 7, Chapter 7 requires a permit to plant, remove or cut down a tree in a public street (§ 7-7-1), says “It shall be unlawful to injure any tree or shrub planted in any public place” (§ 7-7-2), and makes owners remove any limb “likely to fall on or across any public way or place” (§ 7-7-3). We could not confirm who issues the § 7-7-1 permit or what it costs. Owners maintain the unimproved public way beside them, but § 7-1-12A carves out the trees, and § 7-1-7B1 bars pushing snow or ice in a way that damages parkway trees.
We found no permit for removing a tree from an existing private lot; § 11-3-22 calls for landscaping and tree preservation plans only in development review. Diseased trees fall under Title 4, Chapter 6, Article B, which declares diseased elm and infested ash nuisances, sets out notice to the owner, and lets the village abate and place a lien for the cost. The owner’s deadline after notice is short — the code excerpt available to us put it at ten days, though the text was incomplete — so confirm the full section with the village if a notice arrives. University of Illinois Extension explains the early signs of Dutch elm disease.
Ask to see the certificate. Chapter 20 states no registration fee and no insurance minimum, and it does not mention a bond or arborist certification. What it does require is registration and an insurance certificate that holds the village harmless for claims arising from trimming, spraying or removal. Ask any contractor to show you both before work begins — including us.
Flint Creek, Horse Trails And Two Tornadoes
Barrington incorporated in 1865 after pioneers settled the area in the 1830s, had 10,719 residents in 2020, and sits in both Cook and Lake counties; in the Lake County part, that county’s Watershed Development Ordinance applies. Cook County’s 2024 hazard mitigation annex describes an area of “wetlands, forest preserves, parks, and horse trails,” lists the village as a Tree City USA, certified in 1986, and places some of the southwest side near Flint Creek in the flood inundation plain.
The annex also recalls the April 11, 1965 F4 tornado about 9.4 miles from downtown Barrington, which killed six people, and the April 21, 1967 tornado about 5.1 miles from the village center. Most flooding here is local, from heavy rain or spring snowmelt with storm sewers at capacity. A tree whose roots sit in that slow-draining ground through spring meets the first strong storms of the year with less anchorage than it will have in August.
Tree Work For Barrington Properties
- Tree and bush removal — private trees on village lots, and diseased elm or ash once a notice is in hand
- Trimming and pruning — public parkway trees only with the written permission § 3-20-3 requires
- Stump grinding — parkway edges restored, without snow-pile damage to neighboring trees
- Storm response, 24 hours a day
Storm damage. If wires are involved, call 911 and then your electric utility before anyone approaches the tree. Section 7-7-3 makes a limb hanging over the public way the owner’s to remove, so cracked limbs above the street come first after a storm.
