Tree Trimming and Removal in Schererville

Tree Cutting In Schererville, From The Cut To The Curb

The Schererville rule a homeowner is most likely to trip over is not about the tree at all. It is about the pile. Section 6-118(b)(3) of the town code says sticks and branches must be “securely bundled into packages not exceeding two (2) cubic yards in size, and cut into lengths not exceeding four (4) feet,” and § 6-118(d) says yard waste that misses the mark “will not be collected by the Town or its waste disposal contractor” and “shall be tagged with a red sticker.” If you pay for the tree cutting Schererville yards need but keep the cleanup for yourself, cut the brush to four feet before it reaches the curb.

Where Trees Do, And Do Not, Appear In Schererville’s Code

The Town of Schererville publishes its Code of Ordinances on American Legal, current through the 2025 S-24 supplement, in eleven chapters. None of the chapter titles names trees. In Chapter 6, Public Health and Safety, no section title mentions trees or the emerald ash borer; the tree-adjacent text is the yard waste section above and the weeds and rank vegetation article (§§ 6-130 to 6-134). The nuisance list in § 6-139(a) includes “overgrown vegetation” without mentioning trees, limbs or branches. Chapter 7, Building and Construction, has no section titled for trees or landscaping either.

We did not find a tree-removal permit section in Chapters 6 or 7, and we did not search the zoning and subdivision chapter (Chapter 10). Schererville Public Works has put out a short video presentation on the emerald ash borer, but it carries no written policy. The Town of Schererville is the authority on its own requirements. Nothing on this page is legal advice. For background on ash and other common yard trees, the ISA’s consumer site, Trees Are Good, is a reliable start.

Registration under Chapter 7. Section 7-1 requires registration for anyone who would “furnish any labor or supervision in the Town of Schererville, Indiana” on buildings, walks, drains and “any other earthmoving operation,” and § 7-2 counts “the business of landscaping, lawn maintenance, installation of underground sprinkler systems and the like.” Tree service is not named, and the code does not say whether tree-only work triggers registration. Where it applies: a $100 application fee filed with the Clerk-Treasurer (§ 7-5), $50 annual renewal due January 2 and payable by March 1 (§ 7-6), a $5,000 indemnity bond (§ 7-8), and under § 7-10 workers’ compensation, public liability of at least $500,000 for one person and $1,000,000 per accident, and $100,000 property damage. The Crossroads Of America And The Glenwood Shoreline

Schererville calls itself the “Crossroads of America” because U.S. 41, U.S. 30 and the old Lincoln Highway meet there. Nicholas Scherer came to the area in 1865, and the town incorporated in 1911. Today it spreads across 15.15 square miles of St. John and Center townships, with 29,646 residents at the 2020 census. South of Route 30 lies the Glenwood Shoreline ridge.

Those two features shape our jobs here. Trees beside the highway corridors grow near traffic, signs and lights, so a removal is planned around the road as much as the tree. Where a yard sits on the slope of the ridge, a tree has to be lowered in pieces rather than dropped.

Our Schererville Services

Storm damage. If wires are involved, call 911 and then your electric utility before anyone approaches the tree. We take storm wood and brush with us, so nothing has to be cut down to the § 6-118 lengths and left out for collection.
