Tree Removal In Romeoville Under § 92.120
Romeoville writes its tree rule into the nuisance chapter. Section 92.120 says “The existence of any dead, diseased, damaged or dying tree” that “creates a hazard or danger to the safety and health of persons and property” “shall be and is declared to be a nuisance,” and gives the village “the right to cause the removal and abatement of the same.” That turns a leaning, half-dead tree into a code matter the village can act on. If that describes a tree in your yard, book the tree removal Romeoville code points toward before the village books it for you.

Where Romeoville Keeps Its Tree Rules
We found no chapter titled for trees or forestry in Title V (Public Works) or Title IX (General Regulations) of the Romeoville code, and Chapter 94, Streets and Sidewalks, has no tree section. The tree text sits in Chapter 92, Nuisances, under the “Weeds and Plants” subchapter: §§ 92.115 through 92.119 cover weeds, notice, village abatement and liens, § 92.120 (Ord. 0033-03, passed April 16, 2003) covers hazardous trees, and § 92.121 prohibits dumping landscape waste on public rights-of-way or property. A penalty section, § 92.999, exists; we did not confirm its amount. The development and zoning chapters were not reviewed, so whether a permit is needed to remove a healthy private tree could not be confirmed — the village can answer that.
Parkway trees are a separate matter, and the village’s Parkway Tree Replacement Program page is plain about them: “Once a tree is planted on the Village right-of-way, it becomes the property of the Village,” and “The Village is responsible only for the pruning and removal of parkway trees.” Under that program the village contributes $75.00 toward the purchase of each tree, residents buy from the village’s designated landscaper, applications close May 10 for spring and September 10 for fall, and the minimum size is 2.5-inch caliper. Citing Dutch elm disease, the page also limits a row to “no more than five (5) of the same species.” The ISA keeps a homeowner site on tree care.
Romeoville registers contractors. The village’s Contractors Registration page says “All contractors, subcontractors, and plumbing contractors are required to be registered with the Village.” It lists no fee, bond or insurance amount and does not mention tree or landscape work. The Village of Romeoville is the authority on its own requirements. Nothing on this page is legal advice. Ask whoever you hire, including us, to show registration and insurance before the first cut.
From Romeo To Romeoville, And The Wetlands Along Route 53
First settled on September 14, 1835, the town of Romeo voted on January 19, 1895 to incorporate and changed its name to Romeoville. It lies just west of the Des Plaines River, where the I&M Canal was finished in 1848, and Isle a la Cache is a small island in that river. Romeoville was one of the fastest-growing communities in Illinois through the 1990s and 2000s, and more than 600 acres of wetlands along IL-53 became the Hampton Park Subdivision. Where ground once held standing water, roots tend to stay near the surface, and shallow roots let go first when soil is saturated.
The village has been replanting. In 2012 it began assessing and treating parkway trees against emerald ash borer, and in September 2025 it announced a program to plant 2,500 native trees: 55 to come out that fall and 470 to go in during spring 2026 in Poplar Ridge, Heritage Place, Malibu Bay, Marquette Estates and Landing, and Lakewood Estates, replacing trees lost to storms and removing invasive species. The mayor described native trees as “better suited to grow in our soil and climate” and noted that some non-native species have brittle wood that breaks easily.
How We Handle Romeoville Jobs
- Tree and bush removal — dead and dying private trees taken down before § 92.120 comes into it
- Trimming and pruning — yard trees only, since the village prunes the parkway
- Stump grinding — with chips and debris hauled, never left on the right-of-way that § 92.121 protects
- Storm response, 24 hours a day
Storm damage. If wires are involved, call 911 and then your electric utility before anyone approaches the tree. Storm losses are one reason the village gave for its 2025 native planting program, so report a downed parkway tree to the village.
