How Can I Tell If My Tree Is Diseased?
This one of the most common questions we’ve received from concerned home and business owners.
Three of the most common signs that a tree is diseased include:
- Brown or yellow leaves: Your tree’s leaves are one of the best indicators of the organism’s overall health. If they turn yellow or brown long before fall, the cause is likely Armillaria root rot. This condition is caused by a fungus and can cause branches to fall off and damage bark if it goes untreated.
- Flaky or peeling bark: Bark issues almost always indicate disease. Trees can die if enough bark is shed, so don’t wait to have this symptom looked at by a professional.
- Fluid: Also known as “bleeding,” fluid seeping from a tree is a sign of a late-stage infection. You might see fluid running down the sides of the tree, or you may notice foul-smelling liquid at the base.

What Is Tree Topping, and Should I Do It?
Tree topping is the practice of cutting all of a tree’s major branches along with any other secondary branches left over. Reputable tree service companies won’t perform this service, and you shouldn’t do it on your own, either.
Removing a significant portion of a tree too quickly leaves it without the ability to sustain its roots, trunk, and the portions of the branches that weren’t cut off. Moreover, it’s difficult to ensure that such significant cuts will heal properly, making the tree much more susceptible to disease and some of the other issues discussed in the previous section.
