How to Tell that Your Tree is Stressed

October 2, 2017

We tend to only associate stress with humans. However, it’s also a condition that trees can deal with over the course of their lives. A stressed tree can slow growth and even lead to death. But how can you tell when a tree in your yard is stressed? In this blog post, we dive into that and explain how a tree service can help.

  1. Small leaves – If you have a tree in your yard, you should know the normal size of its leaves. One sign of a stressed tree involves the presence of abnormally small leaves. Keep in mind that different species and varieties of trees will have different sized leaves. For the most part, though, smaller leaves indicate that a tree is stressed.
  2. Trunk damage – Are there sizable cracks on your tree’s trunk? While a cracked trunk may not mean the tree is currently stressed, it does open up the door for decay and disease to settle in. So get into the habit of inspecting your tree’s trunk every so often just to be safe.
  3. Smaller canopy – With the leaves already starting to fall, you may have to wait until next year to really take a look. It’s important to know that when a tree is severely stressed, it may shed some leaves while also growing thinner, smaller ones in the process. In turn, the tree’s canopy will be significantly smaller. This is a sign of severe stress in trees.
  4. Bark falling off – A lot of homeowners don’t realize that bark acts as a protective outer layer for trees as it prevents bugs, bacteria, mold, and other foreign invaders from attacking it. Many stressed trees will lose their protective layer of bark, making them susceptible to further damage down the road.
  5. Premature fall leaf coloration – We touched on this in a recent blog post, but early fall foliage also points to tree stress. Deciduous shrubs and trees change their colors during the first few weeks of autumn, turning from green to red, yellow, orange, purple, pink, blue, and brown. Maybe you noticed this year, though, that your tree started to undergo changes much earlier than others in the neighborhood.
